Saudia Arabia, the GCC and the Brewing Crisis in Yemen Declining oil revenues, civil war and southern separatism threaten unity and stability in the strategic Arabian Peninsula state of Yemen. Resurgent terrorist groups have stepped up their campaign inside Yemen and struck across the border in Saudi Arabia. Yemen’s window of opportunity to shape its own future is narrowing, with implications for the security of shipping routes through the Suez Canal and for the internal security of Yemen’s neighbours. Ginny Hill will shed light on the socio-economic climate in Yemen leading to this present crisis and why the world should take greater note. The joint American-British occupation of Iraq is five years old this month and with no sign of ending. Five years on – Iraq is a broken country with no security, severe power supply shortages and medical facilities and basic utilities worse than pre-war saddam era. Violence and insecurity for the Iraqis is the norm with an estimated million (other Iraqi sources estimates are even higher) Iraqis killed to date. Mr. Binyon discussed the reasons behind the failed occupation and the options available for a way out of this quagmire for the occupation.Past Events - PoliticalMon, 24 Mar 2008 09:59:15 +0100Prospects of Peace in the Occupied Land
http://www.open-discussions.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=35&Itemid=26
Three months post Annapolis conference with a commitment that an agreement would be reached by end of 2008, prospects of peace are as distant as ever. With the crisis at Gaza worsening daily, and a continuation of violence across the border with Israel as well as the continued terrorisation and violence in West Bank all highlight the current realities in Middle East. At this Open Discussion Dr Bechler discussed the prospects of a peace agreement with the change of the US administration and the current realities of the troubled region. Rosemary Bechler is a writer and consultant with a Cambridge doctorate in literature, living in North London. In 2000, she helped found Peaceworkers UK which has since become the training wing of International Alert, of which she is a Board Member.Past Events - PoliticalSun, 02 Mar 2008 11:19:06 +0100
