Challenges to Multiculturalism & Citizenship in Britain. PDF Print E-mail

  

Multiculturalism until recently was understood to be a celebration of diversity, appreciation of equal rights and mutual respect. Post 2001, with the Oldham and Burnley riots, sharp increase in immigration and finally 9/11 and 7/7 has led to a shift against multiculturalism and the concepts it stood for. Furthermore, with a decrease in civic engagement reflecting in low turnouts during elections and a general distrust of political institutions and leaders has also led to new challenges to citizenship in Britain.  Prof. Ansari will discuss the key questions that have arisen due to these challenges to multiculturalism and citizenship - do we need to do more  to integrate certain communities around a certain core of common citizenship, how should community segregation and social exclusion of minority groups be tackled
